Councillor Noel Hayes was presented an award from the Local Government Association Northern Territory (LGANT) in recognition of years of service and commitment to local government and the community he serves. At the Ordinary Council Meeting on 31 January 2019 Cr Hayes received his award for 10 years service. Noel, who represents Alyawarr Ward, has been involved with the Barkly Regional Council since the elections in March 2012. A Kaytetye man living in the Ali Curung community, Noel has held numerous governance and positions of authority in both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal structures and is an active advocate for his community. He believes in giving people in the bush a voice and sees his role on Council as a chance to represent his community. Noel is also keen on supporting other communities and is actively involved in a number of organisations, including chair of the Ali Curung Local Authority and a member of the NT Government’s remote public housing reference group. He served as Deputy Mayor for 12 months following the local government elections in August 2017. Mayor Steve Edgington commended Cr Hayes for his huge contribution to Ali Curung and to the local people he represents.
