New era for local childcare

The ageing Yarrunga Early Learning Centre in East Albury is currently being demolished to make way for a refurbished centre on the site.

The $600,000 project has been funded by AlburyCity and Yarrunga with support from the Federal Government.

Stage one of the project is due to open mid-year, providing modern educational facilities to the 120 families who will use it.

AlburyCity Mayor Kevin Mack said the council was delighted to have supported the project.

“The old centre in Woodstock Court was well past its use-by date and was becoming increasingly difficult to maintain,” he said.

“There are few things more important than getting our children off to a good start in life so I’m thrilled that we’ve been able to help provide this fantastic new learning environment for local families.”

Local Federal MP Sussan Ley said while the Commonwealth’s contribution was limited to $20,000, this was the maximum amount available under her local Stronger Communities Program.

“Having child care near where you live or work is very important. Yarrunga has been a partner in the lives of so many families, so I am delighted they’re staying and also that my government can play a part in that rebuild,” she said.

Children from the centre are attending a temporary centre in David Street while the reconstruction takes place.
