Milestone moment for Briggs Park redevelopment 31 January 2019

Work has officially begun on Byford’s first district sporting facility following a special sod-turning ceremony to mark the start of a $3.9 million redevelopment of Briggs Park.  

Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale President Cr Michelle Rich was joined by Member for the East Metropolitan Region Hon Matthew Swinbourn MLC (on behalf of Minister of Sport and Recreation Hon. Mick Murray) and Peel Regional Officer Leanne Peebles (representing Department of Local Government, Sport & Cultural Industries Regional Manager Troy Jones) for the occasion.

Stage One of the highly-anticipated redevelopment is now underway, with completion earmarked for the second half of 2019. The project will see repairs and improvements to aging drainage infrastructure, as well as the installation of new floodlights and facilities for local sporting clubs.

Cr Rich said the project would allow the park’s two ovals to be used year-round, and create a facility capable of hosting much larger competitions and events.   

“This project is integral to providing the Shire’s sporting clubs with modern, purpose-built facilities so they may attract new members and continue to grow,” Cr Rich said.

“Briggs Park is an excellent facility, however, drainage issues has meant that parts of the precinct are unsuitable for year-round use. Through this project, we’re ensuring the park can be utilised to its full potential and giving local clubs the opportunity keep expanding as more people call the Shire home.

“The project will also allow Briggs Park to play host too much larger district competitions, where teams from outside the Shire can take on our local clubs at a facility that’s of a suitable standard and quality.”

Briggs Park is currently home to Byford Bushrangers Tee-ball Club, Mundijong Centrals Junior Football Club and Serpentine Jarrahdale Cricket Club, who combined have over 1000 members.

Financial support for the project is provided by the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale as well as the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries - Sport and Recreation and the Local Projects, Local Jobs program.

“The Shire has been a strong voice advocating the need for investment in local sporting facilities and we’re pleased to be working with the State Government to deliver a project that is of such importance to so many in the community,” Cr Rich said.
