The City of Swan awarded a number of outstanding community members for their contributions to the local community at its first citizenship ceremony for the year on January 26.

The Australia Day citizenship ceremony marked 70 years since Australian citizenship was introduced into law across the country.

City of Swan Mayor David Lucas said the City presents Citizenship Awards every year to individuals and groups who have made a valued difference.

“On behalf of the City, I extend my thanks and congratulations to Jimmy Cangy and Heather Ioppolo who were both awarded the Community Citizen of the Year award,” he said.

“I also congratulate Alexander Pepermans and William Pepermans who won Community Citizen of the Year in the Youth category, Margaret Kidson and Ethel Warren who won in the Senior category, and the Swan State Emergency Service who took out the win for the Group category.

“Selecting the winners is always a difficult task as there are many people who provide a valuable contribution to the local community, so our award winners should feel very proud.”

The City also conferred 57 new Australian Citizens on Australia Day, welcoming new community members from countries including Myanmar, the United Kingdom, Ghana, Iraq and Iran.

Whiteman Ward Councillor and City of Swan Honorary Freeman Maria Haynes said the City is proud to welcome new residents from around the world.

“We are proud to be a vibrant multicultural community, with nearly 33 per cent of our residents born overseas, 153 languages spoken and more than 92 different religious affiliations held,” she said.

“Our residents come from 161 different countries which equates to 82.5 per cent of all the countries in the world today.

“On behalf of the City of Swan Council, I congratulate our residents on becoming new citizens.”
