The Town Welcomes New Citizens on 70th Anniversary

On 26 January 2019, Mayor Renée McLennan and Chief Executive Officer, Peta Mabbs, welcomed 13 adults and 3 children as new Australian citizens to the Town of Bassendean.  The event, which is held throughout the year, highlights the richness of Australia's cultural diversity.  The event involved citizens from Nepal, Italy, Pakistan, New Zealand and Britain. 

The event also signified the 70th anniversary of citizenship.  The first Australian citizenship ceremony was held on 3 February 1949, with seven men – representing each Australian state and territory, like the Commonwealth Star on our flag – swearing their allegiance to Australia.  They came from Czechoslovakia, Denmark, France, Greece, Norway, Spain and Yugoslavia.

The Mayor also presented the Town of Bassendean “Community Citizen of the Year Awards” to an outstanding member of our community.

This award acknowledges local individuals who have given outstanding service and made a significant contribution to the Town of Bassendean. These are people who invest their time in ways that enhance our community.  People whose efforts make a real difference.

This year’s winner was Jeanette Maddison, who was nominated for her outstanding commitment to children’s needs.

Councillors Jai Wilson, Sarah Quinton and Kath Hamilton joined the celebrations and the opportunity to meet some of the Town's newest community members.
