The awards, which will be inspired by the theme of Space in 2019, have become an annual event on the City’s calendar that highlight the wide range of artistic talent across the community. This year the Art Awards will offer seven categories including Open, Emerging, Heritage, Indigenous, Local Resident, and Youth, with a new 3D category also included.
As part of the awards, up to 100 works will be exhibited at the Gary Holland Community Centre and Rockingham Arts Centre from Saturday 4 May 2019 to Sunday 19 May 2019 opening 10am–3pm daily. There will be a total of $20,000 in acquisitive and non-acquisitive prizes available to artists.
Acquisitive prizes involve the City keeping an artistic piece and adding it to the City’s art collection, while non-acquisitive means the artist keeps their work.
Mayor Barry Sammels encouraged artists to enter before the Friday 22 February 2019 deadline.
"The Art Awards are an annual event that give artists from all backgrounds the opportunity to display their creative abilities," Mayor Sammels said.
"The theme for 2019 is Space, so I am excited to see just how entrants portray what that means to them. I encourage any artists, whether they are emerging or established, to make an entry in this year’s competition."
During the exhibition visitors will also have the opportunity to purchase original works to start or add to their own personal collections.
