Charters Towers Regional Council will release its new proposed Regional Planning Scheme for public consultation starting 4 February until 29 March 2019.

Feedback is being sought from landowners, residents, community organisations, business and industry in relation to the draft document.

The new proposed Regional Planning Scheme details Council’s plan for the future direction of the Region by providing a framework for planning and development. It will focus on land use, development, infrastructure and valuable features of our area.

Cr Mike Power urged the community to have their say. “The new Regional Planning Scheme is an important document as it integrates Local, Regional and State Interests into a single regulatory document.

“It will provide a strategic framework that facilitates emerging industries which may not have been considered by the previous plans. This includes Renewable Energy Facilities and Nature Based Tourism.

“As the new plan affects the whole region, we want to hear from the community. How do you want to see land used and what do you think should be done?”

The proposed Regional Planning Scheme aims to foster economic development by significantly reducing Development Application triggers across all zones particularly the City Centre. It supports a greater range of land uses such as alternative business and tourism opportunities within the Rural Zone.

During the community consultation period, Council will hold several community workshops to provide an opportunity to talk face-to-face with Council’s Planning team.
