Burdekin Shire Council Mayor and Local Disaster Management Group Chair Lyn McLaughlin has warned residents throughout the Shire to expect more heavy rain in the coming hours.

Cr McLaughlin said a recent update from the Bureau of Meteorology confirmed the monsoonal wet weather conditions would intensify and continue overnight.

“During today’s LDMG meeting we were advised that while we had experienced some breaks in the weather, there is more heavy rainfall and strong winds on the way,” she said.

“I encourage everyone to remain vigilant and take the necessary precautions for the heavy rain.”

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a minor flood warning for the Lower Burdekin and advised that the Burdekin River at Inkerman Bridge is currently at 7.16 metres and rising.

The river level at Inkerman Bridge is expected to continue rising during Sunday with levels up to the moderate flood level likely over the next few days. Further information will be provided as upstream peaks are recorded.
