Council purchases two properties to help give Kingston’s Green wedge a bright future

Kingston Council has bought two key properties in Kingston’s Green Wedge to ensure they are kept for the community to enjoy for decades to come.

Mayor Georgina Oxley said Council has purchased two properties at 52 and 60 Victory Road, Clarinda for a combined price of $2.6 million.

“When the two properties came on the market Council jumped at the opportunity as they are in a key location neighbouring the future Victory Road Park,” Cr Oxley said.  “The site next door will soon be transformed from a waste site into a fantastic new public park, so it made sense to buy these properties to give us options for the future.”

The 31ha Victory Road Park will become a significant regional park within Kingston’s Green Wedge and a key link in Council’s long-planned Chain of Parks project.  

The Chain of Parks will provide a pathway, linking parks through the Green Wedge from Karkarook Park to Braeside Park and will include a number of open spaces, including the Victory Road Park and the new park being constructed by Council on Elder Street South.

Cr Oxley said the recently purchased properties could potentially be used for parkland, sporting fields or market gardens.

The sites, which total 3.02ha, have been bought using the Green Wedge Fund, which Council has established to fund investments that help bring to life Council’s Green Wedge Plan, which includes the Chain of Parks project.  

Cr Oxley said the purchase is part of a major transformation underway in the Green Wedge with Kingston finally seeing the end of the waste industry in our community, with former landfills now being turned into parklands and open space. “Council’s Chain of Parks plan is now actually being implemented.”

“The area was once home to over 30 active landfill sites, which are thankfully almost all gone. In recent years we’re proud to have opened the new Spring Road Reserve, another link in Council’s Chain of Parks plan.”

“By purchasing these two properties Kingston Council is taking yet another step to ensuring a bright future for Kingston’s Green Wedge for the community to enjoy.”

“Council is also looking forward to working closely with the Victorian Government, which promised during the recent election campaign to invest in Kingston Council’s Chain of Parks trail.”
