Family Friendly Public Holidays at Meelup Regional Park

In conjunction with other government agencies, the City of Busselton is taking steps to ensure a family-friendly atmosphere at Meelup and Castle Rock Beach on Boxing Day and Australia Day next year.

City of Busselton Mayor Grant Henley said that large numbers of locals and holiday-makers are expected to celebrate Boxing Day and Australia Day at Meelup Beach as well as nearby Castle Rock Beach.

“While most will act responsibly there are always some who disrespect the environment leaving rubbish, trampling through the vegetation, parking illegally and generally spoiling the occasion for others.”

Similar controls in past years have proven to be very successful. “The intention is not to dampen people’s fun but to ensure all visitors to the park enjoy a safe and happy day free from the nuisance of those only interested in out-of-control partying,” Mayor Henley said.

Controls implemented on Boxing Day 2018 and Australia Day next year, will focus particularly on water safety, parking compliance and litter prevention. Vehicle access into Meelup Beach and Castle Rock Beach will be restricted with parking at these popular spots limited to designated parking areas only. This will ensure emergency service vehicles have access to these areas and prevent people from parking on fragile native vegetation.

City of Rangers will be attending the park throughout the day to enforce parking controls and to discourage large groups from setting up party equipment or amplified music that may impact the enjoyment of others.

On Boxing Day a Department of Transport marine park vessel will be patrolling our coast. They will be checking on vessels speeding, overloading and being in non-motorised vessel areas. On Australia Day marine vessels from the Department of Transport, and Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions will be on the water.

Local Police will also be on hand to deal with anti-social or criminal behaviour.

Objectives outlined in this statement are aligned with Key Goal Area 3: Environment that is valued, conserved and enjoyed.
