Youth Mental Health First Aid training offered to parents

Published on 04 February 2019

Parents of young people in Benalla Rural City are being offered the opportunity to attend a Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMFHA) training course as part of the Live4Life Benalla program.

The YMFHA course teaches adults how to assist young people who are developing a mental health problem or who are experiencing a mental health crisis. The course offers assistance to parents to better understand and develop skills to support young people.

Mayor, Cr Scott Upston said that having more people in the community with mental health first aid training is important.

“Youth Mental Health First Aid training is key to improving mental health outcomes for the entire community,” said Cr Upston.

“Parents being able to detect and identify mental health issues improves the chances of a young person being properly treated and supported.”

The training course, which runs on Wednesday nights throughout March 2019, is offered to parents of young people in Benalla Rural City. The training is significantly subsidised by the Benalla Live4Life Partnership Group with support from Youth Live4Life Inc., with a cost to participants of $20 to cover the cost of the training manual.

Places are limited so please RSVP by Tuesday 26 February 2019.
