Today is Safer Internet Day!
Safer Internet Day is an opportunity to raise awareness about the safe and positive use of digital technology, and to explore the role we can all play in creating a better and safer internet in our community.
Coordinated by the Office of the eSafety Commissioner in Australia and celebrated in over 130 countries, this year’s Safer Internet Day theme is: ‘Together for a better internet’.
All Australians are encouraged to collaborate with their communities and support each other in developing the critical skills required to successfully navigate the online world. These skills, known as the four Rs, take time to develop but they can help us in all areas of life – online and off:
Respect – I treat myself and others the way I like to be treated Responsibility – I am accountable for my actions and I take a stand when I feel something is wrong Reasoning – I question what is real Resilience – I get back up from tough situationsTo find out more about Safer Internet Day, visit www.esafety.gov.au/saferinternetday.
Bayside libraries were the second library service in Australia to reach eSmart status; having achieved this in September 2014. An eSmart library is a library in which the smart, safe and responsible use of digital technologies is the norm, and all members of the library community are equipped to embrace the best these technologies can offer, while being perceptive and proactive about the pitfalls.
The eSmart program is an initiative of the Alannah and Madeline Foundation, which uses a cultural change approach to improve cyber safety, increase digital literacy and reduce cyber bullying across Australia. Bayside Library Service is proud to have been one of the first to be a certified eSmart Library in Victoria.
