Popular Street Tree program branching out to wider Western Downs

Communities across the Western Downs are embracing the program that is making our streets greener.
Due to the overwhelming success of the Adopt a Street Tree program, Western Downs Regional Council is encouraging the smaller communities in our region to get behind the green initiative beautifying our streets.
The Adopt a Street Tree program gives locals the chance to play an active role in improving the liveability of our region, allowing residents to care for a tree and brighten the appearance of their street.
With nearly 800 residents participating throughout the region since 2017, this free program is lining our streets with thousands of trees that add to the look and feel of the community, and also demonstrates a sense of local pride.
Council Spokesperson for Parks, Open Spaces and Cemeteries Councillor Carolyn Tillman said there was a positive response across the region and she encourages more people to get on board.
“Many locals are impressed with how the trees have improved the appearance of our towns,” she said.
“With bigger towns leading the Adopt a Tree effort, this year we want to have even more participation from the broader community.
“It is fantastic to see the ongoing support for this initiative as it helps keep our region greener, healthier and happier, making the Western Downs a great place to live.”
Chinchilla local Rita Holt adopted a tree in 2017 and encourages more locals to get involved.
“It’s just such a great thing to see people taking responsibility for their towns and caring for their own trees, it really sets an example,” she said.
“The trees are looking amazing on our street, and it would be wonderful to see the same effect all throughout Chinchilla.”
The Adopt a Street Tree program is open to the general public across the Western Downs and it is free to register.
Registrations have been extended and will close on 17 February 2019.
