A community recovery hub will open at the Giru QCWA Hall tomorrow to provide support services to Haughton River flood-affected residents.

Burdekin Local Disaster Recovery Committee Chair Councillor John Woods said the committee felt it was necessary to open the recovery hub due to the abnormally long-lasting floodwaters, which have inundated much of the town for more than a week.

“Giru residents are very resilient and are quite used to regular flooding events, however this is an abnormal event,” Mr Woods said.

“We know this may be a distressing time for many of our residents, but we are here to help the community recover.

“Representatives from a range of agencies will be available to provide in-person advice and assistance, or if you simply need to talk, we will be there to listen.”

Represented agencies include:

Burdekin Shire CouncilBurdekin Community AssociationDepartment of Human ServicesDepartment of Agriculture and FisheriesDepartment of CommunitiesDisability Services and SeniorsDepartment of State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and PlanningDepartment of Employment, Small Business and Training.

The hub will be located at the QCWA Hall, 9 Carey Street, Giru and will open 10am to 2pm on Wednesday 6 February 2019. Residents are asked to bring identification to present on arrival.

Cr Woods said the Local Disaster Recovery Committee was investigating additional opportunities to provide support for those unable to attend at this time.
