Armidale region residents with a vision and passion for sport are invited to submit expressions of interest to join an expanded peak sporting body for the region.

Additional members are sought for the new Armidale Regional Sports Council Advisory Committee and nominations are required by 1 March.

Nominations are open for past and present competitors and officials and anyone else with an interest in fostering local sport.

The regional group replaces two subcommittees for the Armidale and Guyra districts, with some subcommittee members continuing their involvement.

The sports councils were established in the 1990s to improve facilities and opportunities for local sportspeople and clubs. Initiatives to foster local sport include the annual New England Sports Awards and athletes chosen for national and State representative duties.

The regional group’s executive will comprise six community representatives, two youth representatives aged 24 or under and two councillors. Councillors Jon Galletly and Brad Widders have been appointed to join retained executive members Steve McMillan, Mike Porter and Jason Campbell.

There is an emphasis on filling a number of the remaining positions with Guyra residents, so they might comprise around half of the total positions.

Anyone interested in being part of the committee is invited to forward an expression of interest to [email protected] by Friday 1 March.

The expanded executive will be in place for the remaining term of Armidale Regional Council and will be up for re-election in September 2021.
