With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, Canterbury-Bankstown’s Meals on Wheels volunteers, carers and clients will be feeling the love when they attend a FREE concert in their honour. The concert will be held at Club Condell Park, as part of the City’s Seniors Festival, at 10am on Thursday 14 February.
Mayor Khal Asfour said it was a way to thank volunteers and carers for their hard work and dedication to the community.
“We have about 150 devoted community members who give up their time each week to help others,” he said.
“For the past 52 years, our Meals on Wheels volunteers have done a tremendous job in delivering meals across our City and I am proud to say just last year alone, delivered more than 58,000 meals to more than 200 clients.
“So our volunteers and carers are more than deserving of a morning treat.”
Approaching eight years service, volunteer Marie Baker said it was the perfect ‘job’ post retirement.
“I always had the intention when I retired to do something for the community, so when the lady next door used to get Meals on Wheels I thought it was a good option,” Mrs Baker said.
The Padstow resident offers her time four days a week and has no plans to slow down any time soon.
“What I find really fulfilling though with Meals on Wheels is knowing I’m helping people who can’t help themselves,” the 60-year-old said.
“I’ve also made some really great friends over the past eight years as well, both volunteers and those I deliver meals to, which is an added bonus.”
Those looking for flexibility in a volunteer role can look no further than Meals on Wheels according to Mrs Baker.
“I like that I can choose the days I want to volunteer and that it’s only for a few hours,” she said.
