Wollongong Botanic Garden will be supporting the Rotary Club of Wollongong’s planned Mt Keira Community Day on Saturday 23 February 2019.

The event is being presented in partnership with the Illawarra Local Aboriginal Land Council and Wollongong City Council.

It will provide people with the opportunity to join two walking tours. One will be led by a representative of the Illawarra Local Aboriginal Land Council and provide insight into the site’s significance to the local Aboriginal community, and the second will be led by a representative from Wollongong Botanic Garden and share information about the Park’s flora and fauna.

Bookings are essential for the tours and will be available through Eventbrite. The 30 minute tours start from 10am.

The Mt Keira Summit Park was established in 1955 as a Rotary International 50th Anniversary project. It is an annexe of the Wollongong Botanic Garden.

Wollongong Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery encouraged the local community to support the Mt Keira Community Day and learn more about the flora and fauna of the area.

“This is a great opportunity for people of all ages to come along and learn more about this site and to recognise its value within our community,’’ Wollongong Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“Rotary members have invested significant time, care and energy into this site since 1955 and it’s good to have the chance to say thank you, to learn from the Wollongong Botanic Garden’s staff about the site, and to hear firsthand from members of the Aboriginal community about the role Mt Keira plays in Dreamtime stories, and what it offers in terms of bush foods and medicines.

“It’s an interesting time for Mt Keira Summit Park as we collaborate with our community on developing a Plan of Management for 9.4ha the site. While the public consultation closed in December, and staff are working through the extensive feedback, the engagement process showed me there is a desire to know more about this site. This is a chance to meet that need and I encourage everyone to get involved.’’
