Massive response to gateway signage competition

Council has received an overwhelming response to its gateway signage competition with 73 entries lodged.

Entrants were asked to design one sign or a complete set of five signs to be placed at the main road entrances to Broken Hill, with the winning design to receive $5,000.

Council's Manager Communications, Darrin Manuel, said Council had been inundated with responses in the final days before the competition closed.

"We had almost half the entries arrive in the final two days of the competition, it was a pretty frantic period," he said.

"They came in from all across Australia, and many of the submissions were extremely detailed and impressive.

"There's going to be a lot of great entries to consider, and I'm sure the judges will have a tough decision on their hands."

Mr Manuel said Council had initially hoped to judge the competition in mid-February, however it would now likely be decided later in the month.

"It's been quite a lot of work processing and anonymising the entries in preparation for 'blind' judging, but it's a good problem to have, we're really happy that people took such an interest in the competition," he said.

"We also had a member of the proposed judging panel withdraw due to a conflict of interest, which we completely understand.

"We'll now look to finalise and announce the judging panel, then get everyone together to decide on a winner by the end of the month."
