Time to clean up Australia once again

Registrations are now open for Clean Up Australia Day on 3 March 2019, so it’s time to check out rubbish hotspots in your neighbourhood and challenge your friends and family to make 2019 the year when change starts with you.

Central Highlands Regional Council will host a clean-up event in Emerald this year.

Mayor Kerry Hayes said last year’s events in the Central Highlands were a huge success and participating is the perfect opportunity to join family, friends, neighbours and colleagues to remove all the rubbish in your local neighbourhood.

‘In Emerald alone 400 people collected almost two skip bins of litter,’ Mayor Hayes said.

‘While we’re of course wanting to see less litter to be picked up, we would like to encourage as many people as possible to take part in the event and take a stance for sustainable and clean neighbourhoods.’

A total of 18 clean-up sites are registered in Emerald, but council won’t be hosting clean up events in the smaller towns this year.

‘People in our region’s smaller towns take much pride in the cleanliness of their towns,’ Mayor Hayes said.

‘It was identified that clean up areas in the smaller towns would extend outside of town boundaries and along major roadways, which won’t meet Clean Up Australia Day event criteria and people’s safety is our priority.’

Council is actively looking into opportunities to host alternative events in these towns to be held at a later date.

Online registrations for council’s clean-up event are now open at cleanupaustraliaday.org.au and businesses, schools and community groups can still register to host events of their own.

Clean-up volunteer registration on the day starts at 8.00 am at the western entrance of the Emerald Botanic Gardens near McIndoe Park.

Clean-up from 9.00 am to 10.00 am, followed by festivities at the botanic gardens.

People are advised to bring water and sunscreen and wear sturdy shoes, a hat and gloves.
