It’s official Tingha is on the move to Inverell

Residents of the rural community of Tingha have reached a significant milestone in their history with today’s announcement by Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall that Tingha will be part of the Inverell Shire from July 1 2019.
In 2016, the Tingha Citizens Association started a push for the transfer, saying Tingha had a greater community of interest with the Inverell council area.
Armidale Regional Council consulted with the community in 2017 and conducted more comprehensive engagement in 2018, to ensure all households and property owners in the targeted area had an opportunity to provide input on the proposal.
A large response to a postal ballot by Council showed a majority of residents supported the transfer.
Armidale Regional Council Mayor Cr Simon Murray said he was sad to see Tingha leave the Armidale region but respected the strong sentiment of the community to be a part of Inverell Shire.
“When we consulted with the community about the possibility of a boundary review and Tingha moving into Inverell Shire it became pretty clear that the majority of residents believed their community of interest was with Inverell,” said Cr Murray.
“I can see that in many ways residents of Tingha have closer ties with Inverell and feel a part of that community already.
“I wish the community of Tingha well and as a member of the New England Joint Organisation (JO) Armidale Regional Council will continue to collaborate with our JO member Councils to provide opportunities for the entire New England to prosper and grow.”
Significant work has already been completed by Council in anticipation of the boundary review and Council is working closely with Inverell Shire to expedite the changes to Tingha residents as smoothly as possible.Published on 08 Feb 2019
