Roadworks and drainage construction in Dalmahoy Street, Bairnsdale, commenced recently.
Works to be undertaken as part of the project will deliver an improvement to existing informal road and drainage infrastructure on the western side of Dalmahoy Street abutting the Gippsland and East Gippsland Aboriginal Co-Operative (GEGAC) facility. The project will reconstruct the road pavement, and construct kerb and channel within this section of Dalmahoy Street.
East Gippsland Shire Council Mayor Cr Natalie O’Connell said a works contract was awarded to local business JW Volk at the December 2018 meeting of Council.
“The need for improvements along the south side of Dalmahoy Street, between Service and Macarthur street, was identified within the Bairnsdale Growth Strategy (2009) as part of strengthening this area as a residential and education precinct,” Cr O’Connell said.
“More recently discussions with GEGAC regarding the quality of existing road and drainage infrastructure led to this area being prioritised for upgrade and detailed design work undertaken.”
Cr O’Connell said the road upgrade works will be delivered from the 2018/19 budget using funding allocated to Council by the Australian Government’s Roads to Recovery program.
The Roads to Recovery program will provide funding of $350,000 towards this project which has a total cost of $371,000, with the remaining cost funded by Council’s 2018/19 capital works program.
Drainage will be improved and car parking formalised as part of the Dalmahoy Street road upgrade in Bairnsdale.
