Senior citizens play an important role in community life as a whole. They make up a large proportion of volunteers in varying roles, actively participate on committees and often advocate on behalf of elderly people who need additional support.
Tamworth Region Mayor, Col Murray expressed his thanks to all senior citizens who spend their time helping others in the region.
“The most valuable thing that someone can give is their time. This week we especially acknowledge our senior citizens across the Tamworth region for the time, effort and generosity they provide to others in their day-to-life.
“Your contribution to the community, especially our elderly community, is very valuable and we would like to offer you a formal and well-earned thank you,” said Cr. Murray.
The community of Manilla came together today to celebrate its seniors in the second of four awards ceremonies happening across the region this week.
The individuals recognized for the efforts included Lynn Hall, Wendy McLean, Roslyn Betts, Karel Saint, Janette Meehan, Helen Knox, Faye Heywood, and Bob Gardener while the groups acknowledged were Manilla Men’s Shed, Manilla Hospital Auxiliary and the Fundraising Committee of Manellae Lodge.
The Manilla Senior Citizen of the Year for 2019 was awarded to Faye Heywood.
Faye has been assisting with Manilla Health Service’s residential care’s diversional therapy activities for over three years. Her quiet manner, caring nature and sense of humour are appreciated by all. Faye is a quiet achiever that works tirelessly without seeking recognition for all the time she puts into her roles.
Manilla Senior Group of the Year for 2019 was awarded to Manilla Men’s Shed - a great community initiative to help promote a healthy lifestyle for men, help retirees remain productive after retirement and remain in a social network. The Manilla Men’s Shed work to relieve boredom, exercise coordination and improve hand flexibility and have recently made two male oriented “lock boxes” for Manilla Health services residential care’s high care wings.
