Wollongong City Council is reminding owners of certain types of buildings that may have external combustible wall cladding to register their building with the NSW government’s Cladding Regulation website by Friday, 22 February.
Following fires in the UK and Melbourne, the State government has banned the use of aluminium composite panels with a core of more than 30% polyethylene.
Director Planning & Environment [Acting] Mark Riordan said it’s urgent that we work with building owners to register their buildings, and to have the buildings checked to understand the level of risk that the cladding may pose.
“As we have seen we don’t want a fire such as the one recently in Melbourne”, Mr Riordan said. “It’s important to note that the presence of external combustible cladding on a building does not necessarily mean it’s a fire hazard. Building owners are encouraged to engage the services of a qualified building practitioner to carry out an audit and risk assessment of the external cladding.”
The types of buildings that need to be registered are buildings:
with external metal composite panels and/or insulated cladding systems are two storeys and above and include residential apartments, hotels, boarding houses, backpackers’ accommodation, student accommodation, aged-care buildings; hospitals and assembly buildings. All buildings that meet these descriptions should be registered. You can visit the Cladding Regulation Registration website to register.
