Residents can now recycle fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) at Council’s Ayr and Home Hill Transfer Stations.
Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin said the new system would prevent the mercury contained in the lights from entering the environment.
“Whilst fluro tubes and CFL’s are an energy-efficient way of lighting our world, they both contain mercury which is a toxic metal that needs to be recycled properly and kept out of our environment,” Cr McLaughlin said.
“Through this fluro recycling system, Council will recover not only the mercury but also the glass, aluminum and other metals from the tubes, which will be recycled into new products.”
