The City of Swan is urging its residents to demonstrate responsible dog ownership after recently investigating and prosecuting three irresponsible dog owners who were putting other community members at risk.
These prosecutions followed multiple attacks carried out by the same dogs, some declared dangerous, which were found wandering at large.
City of Swan Mayor David Lucas said the City takes reports of dog attacks like these very seriously.
“These cases are a timely reminder that as a dog owner, you are legally responsible for how your dog behaves, and if your dog or a dog in your care attacks another person or animal you will be held responsible,” he said.
“It’s very important to never allow your dog to wander unsupervised, to install secure fencing on your property, and keep your dog on a leash at all times when out unless you are in a designated exercise area.
“I urge all owners to set an example to others by keeping your dog, family and community safe through responsible dog ownership.”
A dog attack includes a dog aggressively rushing at or attempting to attack a person or animal, biting or causing physical injury, tearing clothing or damaging property.
When the City receives report of a dog attack, court action may be taken at the City’s discretion depending on the circumstances of the attack.
Altone Ward Councillor Andrew Kiely said it is very important to report any dog attack incident.
“The City will not tolerate people letting their dog harm others in our community, especially if it has already been classified as a dangerous dog,” he said.
“In the most recent cases, each owner was penalised with fines and court costs of close to $10,000.
“While these penalties are significant, an owner can be charged with manslaughter in the event of a dog attack causing death.”
