It’s ok to play in the street

Contrary to recent media reports, Bayside City Council does not oppose supervised play in the streets. We encourage all families to be as active as possible to contribute to their health and wellbeing.

Dr Hamish Reid, Director City Planning and Amenity said:

“There is no ban on children playing in the street.

“We just want children, pedestrians and road users to be safe.

“Just apply common sense and remove equipment after play so that it does not block footpaths and roadways.”

Council also encourages residents to try to resolve issues with their neighbours before complaining to Council.

Obstructing roadways and footpaths poses risks to public safety, and can attract a fine between $500 - $2,000. Council officers will always work with residents first to educate and try and achieve an outcome without resorting to fines.

Council is committed to encouraging an active community and is investing more than $43 million in upgrades to sporting facilities and playgrounds across the municipality over 10 years.
