There were smiles aplenty at Bangalow today (16 February 2019) for the opening of the new adventure playground at the Bangalow Parklands.
Senator, the Hon Concetta Fierravantti-Wells declared the playground officially open for fun, marking the end of the transformation of what was an under-used section of the Bangalow Parklands.
The playground, a new carpark, a shelter shed and barbecue area were funded by a $250,000 grant from the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions program and the Byron Shire Council ($164,000).
Acting Byron Shire Mayor, Michael Lyon, said the project was a true partnership with the community, in particularly the Bangalow Parklands team.
“The volunteers who had the vision for this amazing playground worked alongside staff to make sure that this incredible park, which has for decades been a place for locals to meet, relax and celebrate, continues to be the natural, green heart of the village,” Acting Mayor Lyon said.
The playground is designed to activate the imagination of children of all ages, utilising sections of timber recycled from old Bangalow bridges to create gang planks, with large rocks, rainforest plantings, climbing poles, and two slippery slides, all providing opportunities for play and creativity.
Christobel Munson, from the Bangalow Parklands team said the new playground blends perfectly with the environment, with the recycled timber and stone providing a natural, exciting play space that does not include any plastic.
“The Bangalow Parklands has been a gathering space for our community for more than 90 years,” Ms Munson said.
“There’s so much history here and the new playground is the start of another chapter to be written by this amazing community,” she said.
“We’re very fortunate to have received the grant funding from the Federal Government, to complement Council’s contribution to deliver this project to the Bangalow community,” Acting Mayor Lyon said.
