RESIDENTS are reminded to never touch fallen or injured bats as high temperatures impact flying foxes in the city.
Councillor John Schilling, who sits on the Flying Fox Advisory Committee, says residents coming across injured bats should contact FNQ Wildlife Rescue on 4053 4467.
“Volunteer carers are responding to the heat stress event including setting up a triage centre at the library roost to care for injured bats and properly dispose of any deceased animals.
“I would like to thank these volunteer carers for their quick response to this heat stress event and commend them for what can be quite distressing work.”
Council is using sprinklers at the City Library site to support the welfare of the colony. The library remains open, however for public safety the area around the roost has been cordoned off.
“There’s a very simple message, no touch – no risk,” Cr Schilling said.
