As the countdown to the 2019 Great Barrier Reef Masters Games (GBRMG) edges towards double-digits, locals are invited to get galloping for a charity fun run with a twist.

The Games Gallop will be a 4km charity fun run, open to anyone who wants to get in on the Games action – regardless of age.

To be held at the picturesque Centenary Lakes, the run will include prizes and giveaways, games and children’s rides.

“The Games Gallop will kick-start the Master Games weekend,” Mayor Bob Manning said. “It’s a chance for everyone to be a part of the fun of the Games, whether or not you’re an athlete.

“There’s no age minimum and it’s suitable for all fitness levels. It’s really about celebrating the Games, welcoming athletes to our city and having a lot of fun in the process.”

The $5 entry fee will support the work of the Dr Edward Koch Foundation on mental health and suicide awareness programs.

Monday 11 February marks 100 days until the opening of the 2019 GBRMG, which will be held in Cairns on 23-26 May.

With 23 sports registered for the four-day tournament, the 2019 Games are shaping up to be the biggest yet.

“Hundreds of athletes from across Australia and beyond will come together for a weekend of competition and fun in the tropics,” Cr Manning said.

“So far, we have athletes registered from as far afield and New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the USA, and every state of Australia.”

New to the GBRMG this year are boxing, dragon boat paddling, football (soccer), lawn bowls, target pistol shooting, power lifting, table tennis and trail and road running.

Registrations are now open with early bird rates available until 31 March.
