More than $2200 in donations collected during the most recent free green waste disposal and free mulch giveaway will support local services for children with autism.

Mayor Bob Manning today presented $2232.60 in donations to Autism Queensland’s Cairns branch.

“This is a wonderful organisation that assists families through specialist diagnostic services, early intervention and ongoing programs, individual therapy and family support,” Cr Manning said.

“We are pleased to be able to make this donation on behalf of residents.”

The voluntary donations were collected at the gate of each of Cairns Regional Council’s waste transfer stations during the free green waste drop-off in November and mulch giveaway in December.

A different local charity is selected to benefit from each of the bi-annual free green waste/mulch periods.

Tanya Kunzler from the Cairns branch of Autism Queensland said the donation would be put to good use.

“We’re constantly implementing new initiatives and programs and this money will go towards resourcing these,” she said. “We’re really thankful for this assistance.”

Smithfield waste transfer station topped the donation tally with $634 dropped into the tin. Babinda produced the highest rate of donations per person, with $72.70 donated in 83 visits to the transfer station.

The next free green waste drop-off will be from 30 March until 7 April 2019.
