Roundabout works to start in Chinatown

Released 19 February 2019

Work to upgrade the roundabout at the intersection of Carnarvon St and Short St in Chinatown will get underway this Monday, 25 February, and is expected to be completed by Thursday 28 February.

The project will require the roundabout and a section of Short St up to the exit from the Paspaley Plaza rear carpark to be closed to vehicles, with detours and traffic management in place for the four days. This could be extended depending on weather conditions.

Record rainfall during the 2017/18 wet season caused permanent damage to the subsurface beneath the roundabout that will require excavation and soil stabilisation to be carried out before resealing and asphalting.

Similar work has been carried out in recent weeks on Frederick St, Lullfitz Dve and Cape Leveque Rd.

Temporary repairs were undertaken in early and late 2018 to allow traffic to continue using the roundabout until the permanent upgrades could be carried out.

The work is being funded through the WA Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements that were activated following the extreme weather of the 2017/18 wet season.

Construction will be carried out by Broome firm McCorry Brown Earthmoving and the project has been timed to dovetail with work on Carnarvon St as part of the Chinatown Revitalisation Project.
