Beach Emergency Numbers

Published on 20 February 2019

Ninety Beach Emergency Number (BEN) signs have been installed along the City of Busselton municipal coastline. Most of the signs installed are on City of Busselton managed coastline, some however, are on land managed by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions.

Each sign has a unique number which identifies the exact location of the beach. In the event of an emergency, people should dial 000 and quote the location code. Where possible the caller should wait at the beach access point for emergency service crew to arrive.

BEN signs may also be referred to when reporting shark sightings to Water Police on 9442 8600 noting that this number is provided on each sign.

The installation of BEN signs is a key feature of the Local Government’s shark mitigation strategy.  The system aims to reduce response times in the case of an emergency and provide greater accuracy for the recording and relaying of shark sight information.
