Dogs at Elsternwick Park Nature Reserve
Bayside City Council 20 Feb 2019

Increased patrols targeting off-leash dogs will continue at Elsternwick Park Nature Reserve on the former golf course site.

The blitz began in November 2018 following reports of many dogs off-leash in the designated on-leash area.

33 warnings and one fine for a second dog off-leash offence were issued over 12 weeks.

Additional dog on-leash signs were also installed in the park.

The reserve is a regionally significant, environmentally focused open space with precious resident and visitor wildlife.

Bayside Mayor, Cr Michael Heffernan said Council officers would continue the strong focus on education and enforcement at the reserve.

“Most dog owners are acting responsibly, however some are yet to heed the message that dogs must be on-leash at Elsternwick Park Nature Reserve,” he said.

“Right now at Elsternwick Park South there are almost 13 hectares of dog off-leash space where dog owners can walk their pets,” Cr Heffernan said.

Consultation on the future design of the nature reserve will commence in March. This will include how the community wishes to use the space and what facilities should be onsite.

Priorities for the design include:

Protecting the natural environment and encouraging biodiversity Increasing enjoyment of the open space via compatible community and visitor facilities Improving water quality in Elster Creek and Port Phillip Bay Reducing the risk of flood damage in Elwood and Brighton.
