Council welcomes Heritage Council decision

Council welcomes the Heritage Council of Victoria’s decision to include Shortland’s Bluff on the Victorian Heritage Register.

“Shortland’s Bluff is renowned as an area rich in maritime and defence history and a critical site for the preservation of indigenous plant species,” said Borough of Queenscliffe Mayor, Cr Bob Merriman.

“The Heritage Council’s decision to include Shortland’s Bluff on the Victorian Heritage Register paves the way for us to refer to Heritage Victoria for advice on the Destination Queenscliff project,” said Cr Merriman.

“Council has already developed a strong working relationship with Heritage Victoria through our consultation in relation to the Point Lonsdale Lighthouse Reserve,” said Cr Merriman.

“We look forward to further collaboration with Heritage Victoria to ensure the conservation of historically significant features and heritage values at Shortland’s Bluff,” said Cr Merriman.

Destination Queenscliff incorporates significant enhancements to key elements of Shortland’s Bluff, including removal of weed species, replanting of indigenous vegetation, pathway connections between Citizen’s Park and the Ocean View Car Park, enhancement of the Bullring, and repairs to the Ocean View Car Park that incorporate an upgrade of existing drainage.

The Heritage Council of Victoria advised the Borough of Queenscliffe that Shortland’s Bluff was approved for inclusion in the Victorian Heritage Register at the Heritage Council’s meeting on 7 February 2019.

The Heritage Council’s decision will be made publicly available on the Victorian Government Gazette at www.gazette.vic.gov.au and on the Victorian Heritage Database.
