Interactive artwork maps Liverpool's diversity

The Liverpool community is invited to contribute to an interactive hand-drawn artwork which overlays the city’s cultural diversity on a map of the world in the lead up to Harmony Day.

Mapping Liverpool, developed by Liverpool City Library in collaboration with Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre and Liverpool-based migrant groups MTC Australia and the Western Sydney Migrant Resource Centre, will be on exhibition at Liverpool City Library from 1 – 21 March.

“Council is proud to celebrate our cultural diversity as one of our city’s great strengths and the message of inclusion, respect and belonging aligns to the values of Harmony Day,” Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said.

“The Mapping Liverpool artwork is a way for Council to engage our diverse community and encourage them to share and celebrate their cultural identities.

“I strongly encourage the community to visit Liverpool City Library in the lead up to Harmony Day to contribute to this fantastic artwork by adding images or a message that’s representative of their country of origin.”

Iraqi-born local resident Ihab Al-Khamees, a member of MTC Australia, was grateful for the opportunity to participate in one of five workshops to develop the base Mapping Liverpool artwork.

“It was wonderful to meet people from countries around the globe to work on Mapping Liverpool together,” Mr Al-Khamees said.

“Council is doing a great job to celebrate multiculturalism and I’m grateful for the opportunity to participate in initiatives like this which allow myself and others to share and celebrate our cultures.”

The community is invited to attend and contribute to the artwork from its launch at Liverpool City Library on Friday 1 March, 11am-11.30am, until 21 March.
