HomeNews Articles2019February 2019 Tamworth to exchange students with Sister CityTamworth Regional Council has developed strong relationships with several Sister Cities across the world, including the New Zealand city of Gore.
Following a decision made at last night’s Council meeting, Tamworth Regional Council is pleased to announce that it will be supporting the student exchange program between Tamworth and Gore, providing an opportunity for young role models to enrich their understanding of the relationship between the two communities.
Tamworth Regional Council Mayor, Col Murray explains: “The continuation of this program is important to the Sister City relationship between Tamworth and Gore. It provides a fantastic opportunity for young role models to act as ambassadors to our region, whilst developing a greater understanding of the important relationship between Australia and New Zealand.”
The Sister City exchange program between Gore and Tamworth was initially established by the Gore District Council in 2006 with students selected through an essay competition. It was reciprocated by Tamworth in 2012, however the program was discontinued after one year due to a lack of entries.
Gore has since decided to reinvigorate the program through a nomination and interview process, and Tamworth will reciprocate the initiative by offering the exchange opportunity to the annual recipient of the Mitchell Brady Encouragement Award.
This year, Council will offer the exchange position to Lara Graham, recipient the 2019 Mitchell Brady Encouragement Award. It is anticipated that the exchange program will take place from 24 to 27 April 2019, aligning with the ANZAC memorial activities.
“Lara will be an excellent representative to our region, and we look forward to hearing about her experience upon her return from New Zealand later this year,” Cr Murray said.
The Gore representative for the 2019 exchange is expected to be announced later this month.
