Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) has come to the aid of North Queensland communities who are struggling, following unprecedented rain throughout the region.

Mayor Paul Antonio said TRC was one of a number of councils from South East Queensland that was providing assistance to its northern neighbours.

“What we have witnessed up north has been quite incredible and to help these communities the Mayors of South East Queensland have made a commitment to support North Queensland,” he said.

“Earlier this month one of our staff members, who is an operational firefighter, was deployed in Townsville and we have also sent our Disaster Management Officer to Cloncurry to support flood recovery operations. This is in addition to the SES staff from the region who have been assisting.

“I have also been calling the Mayors of those regions which have been affected to see if there is any way we can provide assistance.

“In one instance this resulted in us being able to connect one of the regions with a local business that donated vinegar to assist with the clean-up.

“During these testing times it’s important we come together and help those in need.

“After the support we received during our own flood disaster in 2011, this is the least we can do.”
