Low-energy LED street lights come with major environmental benefits.
That is why Northern Beaches Council has teamed up with electricity distributor Ausgrid to install thousands of these street lights in our residential streets.
Beginning in July this year, more than 9300 street lights from Manly to Palm Beach will be switched to the energy-efficient LED lights over the next two years.
In doing so, Council’s carbon emissions are estimated to fall by 3,000 tonnes a year and savings from reduced energy consumption, maintenance and capital costs will amount to more than $1.7 million over the next ten years.
This is because the new LED lights are easier to maintain and will last up to 20 years. They use only 17 watts of energy to power compared to up to 125 watts for the older street lights.
They also provide more effective high-quality light while delivering an 80.5% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
By replacing old mercury-containing lights with LEDs, we will also reduce night-sky light pollution, a nice bonus for local wildlife, star-gazers and amateur astronomers.
