Recycling services business as usual

East Gippsland Shire Council is reassuring residents that the current kerbside fortnightly recycling service has not been affected by recycling storage issues occurring in other parts of the state.

Mayor Cr Natalie O’Connell said recent media reports week around the enforced closure of SKM recycling facilities in Melbourne and Geelong will have no impact in East Gippsland.

“It is business as usual for our recycling services across the shire and we encourage residents to continue putting out their recycling bin for collection,” Cr O’Connell said.

“Our recycling is operated by Tambo Waste Pty Ltd, who then sort and transport this recycling to another recycling company in Melbourne, which remains fully operational. Our recycling is most certainly not going to landfill.”

East Gippsland Shire Council encourages everyone to continue to use the kerbside recycling service and reducing the amount going to landfill wherever they can.

“It’s up to everyone in the community to make wise choices by reducing, reusing and recycling products to lessen the impact on our environment,” Cr O’Connell said.

Many items can be dropped off at no cost at council waste facilities including scrap metal, white goods, car batteries, metal vehicle parts, motor and hydraulic oil (up to 20 litres). Additional items that can be taken to the Bairnsdale landfill for no charge include household batteries, LED light globes, fluorescent light globes, paint tins (with paint), computer monitors and televisions.

The Bairnsdale Tip Shop and a range of other opportunity shops / second hand stores also provide a great way to ensure our unwanted goods are being re-used.
