'Vexillographical Abstract' by Sam Cranstoun

Wednesday, April 24 – Sunday, April 28, 2019 To commemorate ANZAC Day in Brisbane, we will be projecting Sam Cranstoun’s Vexillographical Abstract onto the William Jolly Bridge from 24 -28 April, 5:30-10pm nightly. Sam Crantoun’s Vexillographical Abstract references vexillography—the art and practice of designing flags. By layering and resizing different world flags, the artist creates colourful compositions that evoke the work of Colour Field artists such as Frank Stella or Gene Davis. Sam Cranstoun’s multidisciplinary practice combines various forms of research with a wide array of media to create work that investigates systems of representation. His work focuses on historical figures and events as a way of exploring how history is shaped, how it functions and how we rely on different visuals as a way of understanding the past. These investigations address the importance of the role assumed by the artist in creating work, as well as the importance of popular culture, mass media, art, architecture and design in forming an understanding of our surroundings.
