Mount Compass Recreation Park gets final go ahead

Alexandrina Council has approved the final budget for the Mount Compass Recreation Park with construction set to commence in March 2019. The $1.15m recreation park will include the community’s most desired elements, which were identified through public consultation to be a skate park, BMX track and nature play space.  The park will also include a basket swing and slide.

This project was tendered in September 2018, however estimates received were greater than the initial allocated budget. Council has met a number of times in recent months to consider options for progressing the project, with the shared goal of achieving an outcome that best meets the needs of the Mount Compass community, in-line with Council’s capacity to pay.

The Mount Compass Recreation Park has been made possible with the assistance of the Member for Finniss, David Basham MP, who helped secure $300,000 of external funding from the State Government’s Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure. Combined with a Council contribution of $850,000, the Mount Compass Recreation Park project will transform a barren, unsightly reserve into a vibrant, welcoming community space for residents and visitors alike.

Alexandrina Council Mayor Keith Parkes is confident the park will meet the expectations of the Mount Compass community and provide a valuable, multi-use public space for the benefit of current and future generations.

“We appreciate the feedback offered by community in planning the Mount Compass Recreation Park. Having involved all Elected Members in detailed design negotiations, we have now settled on a final design which encapsulates a variety of popular elements which were enthusiastically supported at our public consultation forums,” he said.

“We look forward to working with the township of Mount Compass over coming months to bring this exciting and much awaited project to life”.

The contractor, LCS Landscapes, is a well renowned creator of skate parks and nature play spaces, and has previously worked on the Bristow Smith Reserve Nature Playspace at Goolwa and the Adelaide Zoo Nature Playground. 

A community information session will be held in the coming weeks to advise the community of the project details, the construction schedule and future opportunities for community involvement, which will include community tree planting and for one lucky student, a unique work experience placement.  The project is scheduled to take around four months to complete.
