A new master plan will be drawn up to guide the future of the popular Cabravale Leisure Centre as a Health and Wellbeing Precinct.

Councillors voted at Tuesday night’s Council Meeting to develop a Master Plan for the centre, including a number of recommended uses and activities.

The plan will focus on positioning the centre to cater to the elderly, people living with disabilities and those recovering from illness or surgery.

The services could include a hydrotherapy pool, spa, sauna and steam rooms for people of limited mobility; gym for people undergoing rehabilitation after illness, injury or surgery; doctors and counsellor’s rooms; short term accommodation and improved café.

The expansion would drive a significant increase in the use of the Centre while ensuring the Centre continues to serve the broader community.

Fairfield City Mayor Frank Carbone said the role of the City’s leisure centres was evolving.

“This is an exciting project that will provide specialist services to meet the needs of members of our community including seniors, people living with a disability and people recovering from health conditions,” Mayor Carbone said.

“Fairfield City has one of the highest numbers of people living with a disability in NSW. We have an ageing community and many of our residents are living with significant health issues.

“Council is committed to helping improve the health and wellbeing of residents and provide spaces where everybody can be healthy and active, regardless of their age or ability.”

To provide spaces and activities that cater to all the City’s residents, Council is redeveloping Fairfield Showground, creating a playground at Deerbush Park for children of all abilities, and continuing to expand the Aquatopia water park.

The Fairfield Youth and Community Centre, Fairfield Adventure Park and our three leisure centres also serve to the community in providing affordable and accessible options for residents to stay healthy and active.

Cabravale Leisure Centre was opened in September 2007 with the intention that it serve as a centre of wellbeing for clients experiencing a range of health conditions.

Currently, the centre includes a modern gymnasium, a 20 metre five-lane heated indoor swimming pool, sauna and a multipurpose indoor aerobics/program room, community function room, and meeting and training facilities.

The Master Plan will provide a detailed long term strategy for the management, use and development of the Centre. It is expected that the Master Plan be completed by the end of 2019 or early 2020.
