Proposed cycling events in Williamstown

Council has been approached by Cycling Australia and the Australian Masters Games to hold two cycling events in Williamstown in October this year.

The Cycling Australia event is from 3 – 6 (Thursday to Sunday) October 2019, estimated 500 participants. The Australian Masters Games – Cycling is from 9 – 11 (Wednesday to Friday) October, estimated 200 participants.

Both events include a time trial, road race and criterium. The proposed routes for each of the events are still being determined and will use a combination of main road and potentially some side streets within the Williamstown Town Centre. While these roads wont be formally closed, access may be inconvenienced. Event organisers have however confirmed that residential access to properties will be available by motorbike escort throughout the event as required. A process will be put in place for this.

While there is great potential for positive economic impact to local businesses and accommodation providers, we are also mindful of the impact on residents of Williamstown and are interested in your thoughts.

Council will be making a decision on hosting this event at the 19 March meeting and your summarised feedback will be provided identifying any trends within the Williamstown community being for being in favour of the events or not.
