Make Your Voice Heard in Growth Areas Perth and Peel Campaign

In July 2018 the City partnered with 10 other local governments across the Perth metropolitan area to form the GAPP (Growth Areas Perth and Peel) alliance to advocate for special purpose Federal Government funding. 

Each local government which is a part of the GAPP alliance has nominated a specific project as part of the campaign. For the City of Rockingham, the Baldivis District Sporting Complex (BDSC) has been identified as the priority project and grassroots advocacy from the community is considered vital to successfully securing Federal funding for the project. 

The BDSC will be located on Eighty Road and is a development designed to meet a significant shortage of active reserve space in Baldivis for present and future sporting groups. It will provide about eight hectares of open space, two pavilions, 18 outdoor hardcourts, a nature playground, youth space and an indoor recreation centre.  

The project will comply with all environmental approvals and work on site is expected to begin in late 2019. 

City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels encouraged residents to show their support for the BDSC funding proposal by writing to their local MPs and showing support on the GAPP website.  

"The development of the BDSC will have a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of our community, delivering huge sporting and social benefits for residents and clubs alike," Mayor Sammels said.   

"The City is financially committed to deliver the project. Additional funding from the Federal Government would provide a significant boost and allow the City to move forward with its City wide community infrastructure program. 

"Residents can add their voice to the campaign by writing to their State and Federal MPs, and also by leaving a message of support for the campaign on the GAPP website. The more voices that lend a helping hand to the campaign, the better our chances of securing Federal funding for this important project."

GAPP is one of the largest collaborative projects ever pursued by local governments in Western Australia. Together, the 11 LGAs involved represent more than 50 per cent of Perth’s population. 

Joining the City of Rockingham in the campaign are the cities of Cockburn, Gosnells, Mandurah, Kwinana, Swan, Wanneroo, Kalamunda, Armadale, Canning and the Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale. Around 75 per cent of Perth’s population growth is occurring in these outer metropolitan communities, yet very few have adequate sporting facilities.  

Ultimately, GAPP aims to lobby the Federal Government for a contribution of up to $350 million that will be spread around local governments over the next six years. Funding contributions to each individual project would be capped at $30 million, with communities and sporting clubs able to benefit from easy access to new recreational facilities.
