Serpentine Jarrahdale residents are being encouraged to support a community campaign to improve pedestrian safety at the level rail crossing near Whitby Estate.
Mundijong Walking Group and the Mundijong Community Association are calling on Main Roads WA to approve and construct a pedestrian crossing at the rail crossing near Kiernan Street and Soldiers Road in Mundijong.
Pippa Spibey from the Mundijong Walking Group said the lack of a designated crossing over the tracks was a major concern.
“People have to walk in the middle of the road to cross the tracks, it’s a dangerous situation,” Ms Spibey said.
Keira McConkey, Chair of the Mundijong Community Association and Shire councillor, said a designated pedestrian footpath connecting Whitby Estate to Soldiers Road was a priority for the community.
“The number of people using this footpath is increasing and we need to ensure that people using this route have a safe, designated path to cross the rail track,” Cr McConkey said.
The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale is currently extending the footpath from the entry of the Whitby Estate along Tinspar Avenue and Keirnan Street to the eastern boundary of the railway corridor.
The footpath stops approximately 20 metres from the rail track.
Shire President Michelle Rich said responsibility to approve and construct pedestrian crossings at rail crossings sat with Main Roads WA.
“The safety of our residents is a priority. We don’t want school children having to use the road to cross the tracks,” Cr Rich said.
“To date, the Shire has been unsuccessful with our requests to the Public Transport Authority and Main Roads WA for the installation of a pedestrian crossing at this location.
“We welcome the support from our local community groups and we hope Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale residents can join us in advocating for this important issue.”
Residents who want to support the campaign for a pedestrian crossing at the rail crossing near Kiernan Street and Soldiers Road in Mundijong are encouraged to write a letter or email to Transport Minister Rita Saffioti.
“We hope the more people who support this campaign will help influence decision makers to install a pedestrian crossing,” Cr Rich said.
