Coast delegation heads to China to sign ‘landmark’ sister schools agreements

Mayor Bill Ludwig said this was one of the first times a combined group of State and private secondary schools had joined forces with the support of Council and State Government to simultaneously formalise multi-school region to region relationships.

“The collaborative effort was initiated by Deputy Mayor Nigel Hutton to pro-actively build on the Sister City Friendship relationship established between Livingstone Shire and Yangzhong City just 18 months ago,” Cr Ludwig said.

“Cr Hutton and the principals of Yeppoon State High, St Ursula’s and St Brendan’s Colleges must all be commended for their hard work in bringing this initiative to fruition.

“I would also like to acknowledge the solid support and participation of State Member and Assistant Minister for Education Brittany Lauga MP along with our Indigenous Youth Ambassador Caitie Hughes,” Cr Ludwig said.

Deputy Mayor Nigel Hutton said the ‘landmark’ simultaneous school signings will not only enhance educational, friendship and cultural ties with Yangzhong, but will also potentially open the door to one of the largest markets for international student exchanges and visiting study tours.

“Engaging with schools and the young people of our respective regions, as part of Council’s overarching sister city friendship relationship with Yangzhong, is a powerful way of ensuring the investments of today will continue to bring mutual social, economic and cultural returns well into the future,” Cr Hutton said.

“A world leader in renewable energy development, Yangzhong City can provide a wealth of study opportunities as well as access to experts to mentor students to develop and realise the full potential of our sustainable energy future.

“Creating an environment where young people can experience cultural and social diversity also gives them an advantage in a global workforce where understanding, appreciation and knowledge are powerful skill sets.

“Ultimately this initiative will also play a significant role in making our region ‘China Ready’ to take advantage the massive tourism opportunities between China and Australia,” Cr Hutton said.

Assistant Minister for Education Brittany Lauga said she was keen to support the establishment of links with Yangzhong that encourage more cultural exchanges between our two regions.

“Everyone involved with this initiative should be congratulated,” Mrs Lauga said.
