Junior Touch Football Committee Call-Out For Coaches And Referees

The Moree Local Drug Action Team held its first Junior Touch Community meeting Tuesday, 26 February where nine members of the community put their hands up to be on the committee for the launch of the 2019 season.

The program for 7-17 year olds is one step closer to kick off with a sign up and skills day planned for mid to late March.

Council’s Community Development Officer Ros Laws explained, “we are excited to have the junior touch football committee up and running”.

“We rely heavily on these volunteers, who contribute to the future success of the program in Moree.”

The new committee members are: • Chairperson – Lesley Fernando • Secretary – Bronwyn Adamson • Media/Promotions – Russell Cook • Ground Manager – Paul Spearim

The committee are still looking for eligible coaches and referees to undertake the free training to be accredited by NSW Touch.  All fees associated with coaching and referee training will be covered by the Local Drug Action Team.

Mrs Laws explains that referees and coaches are crucial to the game and volunteering can be very rewarding.                                                                                    “You just need to have a Working with Children Check and the passion to help out our youth,” said Mrs Laws

Additionally, as part of the LDAT funding, all players can participate for free this season, and a number will be eligible for free membership with the PCYC, courtesy of Moree Community Drug Action Team.

Touch football is one of the fastest growing sports in the Country. The sport has over 690,000 registered members and is among the top participant based, organised sports in Australia.

“Touch football is fun, safe and inclusive. It can be played by both boys and girls of all ages and the low contact nature of the sport makes it easy for children with limited sporting experience,” Mrs Laws said.

All players will be required to participate in a short workshop around safety, personal development and healthy lifestyle which will be presented by participating services before each game commences. Workshops will be held weekly prior to games and it will be a rule of no workshop, no play for the duration of the funded program.
