Burdekin Tourism going places with mobile Visitor Information Centre

Visitors to the Burdekin region will soon be visiting a different type of Visitor Information Centre, with Council currently developing an innovative information centre on wheels.

Standing at 14 metres long and nearly three metres high, the new mobile Visitor Information Centre (VIC) is expected to hit the road in June.

Mayor Lyn McLaughlin said the mobile VIC would be able to attend events throughout North Queensland, such as the Sweet Days, Hot Nights Festival and Townsville Defence Expo.

“A mobile VIC has many advantages over a permanent facility and will be a point of difference from other centres throughout the region,” Cr McLaughlin said.

“The resources on-board will present an exciting, interactive experience that can be used to promote what’s on in the Burdekin to both visitors and locals alike.”

Council elected to purchase the four-wheeled centre after identifying a need to replace the ageing Ayr Visitor Information Centre.

When not on the road, the mobile VIC will be parked at a dedicated bay within Plantation Park. Additional elements of the Ayr Visitor Information Centre Redevelopment project include the construction of a dedicated parking bay, undercover area and new toilet amenities.

Cr McLaughlin said the new VIC would complement the Plantation Park Nature Based Play Space, with both projects scheduled for completion mid-year.

“Until this project is completed our tourism volunteers will continue to provide visitor information services from a temporary information centre located beside Plantation Park’s Gudjuda Deck Café, facing Kennedy Street,” Cr McLaughlin said.

Cr McLaughlin thanked the Queensland Government for supporting the project under the Works for Queensland Program.
