State MP Kevin Anderson and Mayor Col Murray celebrate the completed airport terminal upgrade

Twelve months of construction on the $3.9 million extension and upgrade of Tamworth Regional Airport terminal - funded by the NSW Government - is complete.

State Member for Tamworth, Kevin Anderson and Tamworth Region Mayor today unveiled a plaque marking the completion of work.

The expansion and upgrade is a complete makeover. It includes: a new boarding gate, departure lounges, retail space (for car hire companies), toilets, expanded check-in area, new café and associated food preparation and storage areas, newly furnished dining area with ceiling to floor windows taking in views across to the mountains, new bathroom amenities (including a separate facility for use by people with a disability or parents who need an area for changing their baby), new lounge areas and function room.

There has also been electronic flight information displays installed.

Tamworth Region Mayor Col Murray said the terminal upgrade was essential for Council to continue to support the airport’s growth into the future.

“This project funded by the State Government has allowed us to enhance and extend our facilities to ensure our customers have a positive experience in Tamworth,” he said.

“The airport is a key community asset which delivers major economic benefits to the Tamworth Region through business and tourism travel and as a hub for the local aviation industry.”

Mr Anderson said the terminal was the front gate to Tamworth and "first impressions were lasting".

“This is what people expect when they come to a modern, sophisticated city," he said. "This is a beautiful facility; we want it to be modern, fresh and welcoming.

“As our city and region continues to grow, we’re working really hard to put in place the infrastructure and facilities to make it more attractive."

The upgrade was wholly funded by the NSW Government under the Restart NSW Regional Tourism Infrastructure Fund. It follows the $2.3 million airside upgrade - awarded $2.1 million under the same program - giving the airport the acpacity to receive aircraft up to the size of Boeing 737-800s.
