Residents can now get Active

The long awaited $26 million upgrade of the Armadale Fitness and Aquatic Centre (AFAC) will throw its doors open to the public on Monday 11 March.

The new state of the art centre will offer something for every member of the community – including swim school classes, a Program Pool, high tech gym equipment and a range of group fitness classes to suit all ages.

City of Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones OAM, JP said the upgrade to the original centre, formally known as the Armadale Aquatic Centre, has been a 30 year dream for the community.

“The reopening will be an important milestone in the City’s history - we can now tick the largest strategic project of our Long Term Financial Plan off the list with pride and satisfaction.

“Our all year round facility is attractive, inviting and frankly spectacular, and the equipment is second to none.

“Our community have told us they want to relax, to enjoy time with family and that they want their fitness to be fun, and our facility and brand have focussed on bringing that to our residents.”

The City has incorporated a number of access and inclusion features in the design of the building to ensure all community members can access and enjoy the facility.

“The facility has seven universal accessible toilets, wheelchair seating allowances in the 25 and 50m grandstand, aqua wheelchairs, a range of accessible equipment and an audible hearing loop in the gym.

Wheelchair ramps and handrail accessibility are available in all pools. The Program Pool also has a ‘Changing Places Change Room’ with a ceiling mounted accessible hoist and adjustable change table,” added Mayor Zelones.

The new facility also boasts geothermally heated pools including a 25 metre indoor pool, covered leisure pool, program pool, 50 metre outdoor pool and zero depth splash pad plus a wellness suite equipped with a spa, sauna and steam room.

“AFAC members can be certain they are getting active in the very best facility with the very best equipment. Whether they are looking to get in shape, improve and maintain overall health or simply have fun with friends and family, there is something for every member of our community,” added Mayor Zelones.

Visitors to the Centre can also take advantage of the crèche and café and the much loved shaded picnic areas with BBQs.

The Health Club is fitted out with Technogym equipment, the official supplier to six Olympic and Paralymic Games, and there’s also Cycle and Group Fitness Studios.

“The facility, located at 76 Champion Drive, Seville Grove, is also a short walk from Sherwood Train station so members can use public transport and fit in a warm up before they get to the Centre,” added Mayor Zelones. 

The construction of the facility was made possible with the assistance of the Federal Government through a $10 million contribution from the Community Development Grants program, a $1 million grant from the State Government’s Department of Local Government, Sport and Culture, and $15 million from the City of Armadale.
